Breaking Down Stigma and Raising Awareness: The AlzInColor Campaign

By 2030, 40% of those living with Alzheimer’s disease will be Black and Latino, a new campaign is starting the conversationAs the fourth leading cause of death for Black individuals over 65, Alzheimer's disease is a silent killer that has been shrouded in stigma and shame. But one woman is determined to change that by launching a groundbreaking campaign that aims to elevate brain health conversations across Black and Latino communities.

A Personal Journey of Loss and Advocacy
Deanna Darlington, the founder of AlzInColor, knows firsthand the devastating impact of Alzheimer's disease. Her father passed away from the condition, but she credits her access to resources, a strong support system, and open communication with her family for helping her navigate this difficult time. Now, she's using her experience to spark conversations and raise awareness about the disease in communities of color.

A Campaign Born Out of Necessity
Darlington notes that despite being at greater risk, Black and Latino communities often remain in the dark about Alzheimer's disease. The campaign aims to change this by providing a resource library, brain health quiz, personal stories, and webinars designed to help families normalize discussions around brain health. By sharing their experiences and speaking openly, Darlington hopes to break down stigma and encourage others to seek help sooner.

A Call to Action: Share Your Story
Through the AlzInColor campaign, Darlington is inviting others to share their stories of living with Alzheimer's or caring for loved ones. By doing so, she hopes to create a sense of community and solidarity among those affected by the disease. The campaign has already made waves with its inaugural 'Latino Brain Health Awareness Week' and 'Black Brain Health Awareness Week,' which aim to raise awareness and promote education about brain health in these communities.

A Message of Hope and Empowerment
Darlington's message is clear: Alzheimer's disease is not something to be ashamed of, but rather something to talk about, learn from, and understand. By sharing their stories and experiences, individuals can help break down stigma and create a more supportive environment for those affected by the disease. As Darlington says, 'We have to begin to speak about it more.' It's time to raise the volume on this urgent conversation.

The AlzInColor campaign is a powerful reminder that awareness and education are key to breaking down stigma and promoting brain health in communities of color. By sharing their stories, experiences, and perspectives, individuals can help create a more supportive environment for those affected by Alzheimer's disease. As we move forward, let us continue to raise the volume on this important conversation and work towards creating a brighter future for all.
